Best Practices When Taking a Dog Friendly Boat Tour

Key West is one of the most popular destinations in Florida. Around five million people head to the southernmost tip of the United States each year. The white sandy beaches and clear blue water make the Florida Keys a wonderful place to spend your vacation.

There are countless activities you can experience while in the Keys, including a dog-friendly boat tour. Most dogs love being in the water. Spending the day cruising around the ocean with your four-legged friend is a great way to make memories with your family.

However, there are some things you should keep in mind when going on a boat tour with your dog. This guide will discuss best practices for taking your dog on a boat tour. Ensure a great experience for you, your dog, and everyone else on the boat with our tips.

Bring a Life Vest for Your Dog

While many dogs know how to swim, the last thing you want to do is test the swimming strength of your dog while out at sea. Everyone on the boat, including your dog, should wear a life vest.

Even if your dog knows how to swim, it can go into panic mode if it gets thrown overboard. They also might suffer from hypothermia or exhaustion from trying to stay above water. Some dogs fall into the water, trying to get from the dock to the boat.

Dog-friendly flotation devices come equipped with a handle on the back that makes retrieving them easier. You should have your dog wear their life vest around your home before the boat tour so they get used to it. Take them to a nearby body of water so they can practice swimming with it on.

Pack Supplies for Them

Just like you pack snacks, sunscreen, and other items for yourself, you should do the same for your dog. Some of the things you should bring include:

  • Water: Pack water for your dog, including a bowl

  • Leash: You'll need a leash if you encounter other boaters or make an unexpected stop

  • Sunscreen: Purchase dog-friendly sunscreen for parts of their body where their fur is thin

  • First-Aid Kit: Bring insect repellants, bandages, medications, and ointments

  • Toys: Blankets, rope toys, and bones will keep your pup occupied

  • Food and Treats: Make sure they don't get hungry during the trip

  • Waste Bags: For when nature calls

While many Key West boat tours are pet-friendly, you shouldn't expect them to have everything you need for your dog. Being a responsible pet owner means coming prepared for your animal.

Invest in Dog Training

A little bit of dog training goes a long way before going on a boat tour. A trained dog will know how to respond to dog commands, keeping themselves and everyone else safe. Training will also ensure that they're well-behaved during the entire trip.

Small dogs can get easily carried on and off a boat. If you're bringing a larger dog, that's not always an option. You can practice having your dog get on and off the boat before the trip if you're able to.

There are also dog ladders or ramps that make it easier for dogs to get onto a boat. The rocking of the boat while docked can make it intimidating for them to get onto.

You should also show your dog that they have a designated space to go while on the boat. The dog shouldn't be running around while the boat is speeding around the water.

Invest in a clicker to assist you with teaching your dog commands. Reward your trained dog with treats when they exhibit good behavior.

Plan for Breaks

Your dog might feel comfortable using a puppy pad to relieve themselves. However, some dogs might not feel comfortable going to the bathroom until they're back on dry land.

Work comfort breaks into your boat tour schedule. Pay attention to how often your dog goes to the bathroom during the day. Plan for several pit stops during your trip, especially since they might be drinking more water due to the heat.

Don't Overfeed Your Dog

You should come prepared with food and treats for your dog. Keep in mind that you'll want to keep feeding them to a minimum. Several factors can contribute to pet sea sickness:

  • The smell of boat fuel

  • Choppy current

  • Rolling waves

  • Nerves

If you decide to feed your pet, give them small amounts at a time. You want to avoid them overeating and getting sick.

Provide Shade for Your Dog

It can get hot sitting in the sun all day, especially if you're on a boat. The sun reflects off of the water, increasing the chance of sunburn and heat exposure. Your dog could overheat if they don't have a shady spot to relax in.

Dogs shouldn't be kept in the sun all day. Their bodies can get sunburned, and they can suffer from heatstroke. Some places where they can find shade include:

  • Below decks

  • Under seats or console

  • Underneath the awning

Make sure they have a bowl of water by their side. Drinking water will keep them from getting dehydrated and cool them down. Lapping up the seawater could cause them to get sick.

Get Them Familiar With the Boat

You might not be able to familiarize your dog with the boat until it's time for your tour. Have them get on the boat while it's still docked. Turn on the engine and have them listen to it before you head out on open water.

Taking this extra time to make sure they're comfortable will decrease your dog's stress levels.
