Where We go & What We See

Start It Off Right…

At Sea Monkey Charters, our mission is to provide our guests with an unparalleled experience, showcasing the most captivating marine landscapes surrounding Key West. A Key West Sandbar charter extends beyond a simple excursion to and from a sandbar. We embark on a journey through the most scenic and shallow passages connecting Key West to some of the most picturesque sandbars and islands within the Florida Keys.

From the Dock to the Sandbar

Most of our trips kick off from the Hyatt Centric at 601 Front Street, right in the middle of downtown Key West. It's a breeze to get to from just about any of the best hotels, guesthouses, and rentals around.

Once we cast off, you'll see we're right in the heart of Key West's historic waterfront, surrounded by all sorts of marine critters and beautiful old buildings. From there, we'll head northeast into the shallow, clear waters of the backcountry.

The backcountry is full of hidden channels twistin' and turnin' through the grass flats, sometimes with water just inches deep. These channels guide us to and around mangrove islands, each one laced with its own little waterways snaking through the roots

Now, these channels can be tricky for just any boater, but my captains and I have spent years learnin' every twist and turn. That's how we know where to find the most stunning views and the richest marine life these famous waters have to offer.

With the water averaging just 3 to 7 feet under the boat, and crystal-clear all around, the views on our trips are truly somethin' special.

As we wind through the channels, skirtin' the sea grass beds, you'll see the water change colors right before your eyes, and the lively marine creatures below become the real stars of the show.

Mangrove Islands

Mangrove Islands

After a 20 to 30-minute journey through the picturesque shallow waters, we typically arrive at one of several distinct groups of mangrove islands. These islands are closely spaced and feature intricate channels resembling a maze, with one even boasting a secluded sandbar tucked away at the end of a narrow, shallow channel. Frequently serving as our initial destination during our excursions, this sandbar offers a short sandy, shallow-water path traversing beneath the canopy of trees, culminating in a tranquil swimming hole with a breathtaking view of the shallows beyond.

While this sandbar is relatively small and often attracts a crowd, we typically proceed beyond it after completing our exploration of the shallow path and the surrounding trees. Subsequently, we return to the boat and embark on a new adventure, seeking out wildlife, scenic vistas, and pristine sandbars.

Not Every Sandbar…

However, not all sandbars are equally accessible. Some guests prefer the company of others, while others seek solitude. Our primary objective is to select a sandbar that aligns with the preferences of each guest.

As we cruise through the shallows and between the quieter islands, we often pass by the busier sandbars, the ones with lots of boats and people. They're fun, no doubt, but they might not be the secluded paradise some are after. That's why folks who come with Sea Monkey Charters usually expect a more private spot, which means we often go beyond the crowds to explore the more hidden corners of the backcountry.

A Dreamy Destination

Heading away from the crowds, we'll navigate even shallower waters and maybe duck through a few more mangrove channels. Our usual final stop is one of those out-of-the-way sandbars that most boaters can't even get to. But with my specially chosen boats and gear, we can handle the trickiest spots to find the most private and beautiful sandbars around.

These sandbars are generally nice and shallow, perfect for kids and dogs to really enjoy themselves. Let's face it, a sandbar where the water's up to your chest just isn't as much fun as one where it's knee-deep or even ankle-deep.

Our charter guests will spend some time exploring the sandbar, observing marine life, and relaxing in the water or on the floating dock pad, soaking up the sun. Frequently reminiscing about the memorable experiences they had over libations, and often enjoying snacks or light meals.

Depending on the duration of the trip, which can range from four to eight hours, the lounging time throughout the charter can vary. Nevertheless, the adventure does not conclude there. The return trip to the dock is often replete with sights and sun before gently placing you back where we discovered you.
